1 Degus
What are Degus like as pets? They've always fasinated me and I wanted to get a pair before I found out about and got rats. They seem like funny little creatures
We don't have many pets these days, when I was younger though we had loads, lol. At the moment we /I have...
4 rats
3 dogs
2 fish
Degus are fascinating critters. They're very smart (maybe not quite as smart as ratties, lol) and have a wide range of vocalizations, which sounds a lot like chirping and a babbling brook. They'll "talk" to you if you chirp and whistle to them. It used to drive my husband crazy when I did that but I guess he just tunes it out now.
There wasn't much info about them on the web when I got my first pair of sisters so I had to do a lot of indepth looking, mostly into lab research to find anything about them. There wasn't much food available for degus' commercially so I've ended up making my own version of a " 'GooBee" mix that works really well for them.
They really should be in pairs or even better a trio. They're like chins and should have a "dusty bath" available. They are hilarious to watch when they roll around in the dust.
Degus are mostly friendly but not really domesticated and don't care much to be picked up. They will tolerate being petted or taking treats from your hands. They need space and lots to chew on and climb on. And they loooooove running on wheels!
I love my 'goos but if I had to choose between the two I would definitey pick rats over degus. Rats are much more "interactive" and form bonds with their humans where the degus don't.
