Rats seem like such an "exotic" pet. I'm wondering what kind of other pets we have. I know my little zoo is mismatched.

I've got the 6 rats, a senegal parrot, 1 french mastiff (15 months old and 100 pounds. a 100 pound puppy is 10 times worse than a 10 pound puppy ) 1 shetland sheepdog (12 years old and 28 pounds. )

So two dogs is pretty normal, but having a bird and rodents always raises a few eyebrows. I also had tree frogs but they passed away within a few days of eachother for no reason. I think it might have been a parasite that was contageous. RIP.

So, do you have more "exotic" pets besides rats? Do you stick to rodents? Or do your pets range from fish to reptiles to rodents to cats and dogs?

As a family we have;

15 rats
1 field mouse
1 golden retriever
2 cats
1 guineapig

We've had a lot more in the past - this is tame for our family haha. The rats and mouse are mine.

I'm on the waiting list for a Gambian Pouched Rat too, so that will be added to the list in the near-ish future :D

Ohhhh my house really is a zoo, it's quite a list.
So here goes:

16 Rats
7 Bearded Dragons
13 assorted TYPES of geckos (the husband won't tell me how many we have in total anymore)
3Cats
1 Chinchilla
1 Beta Fish
2 Lacertas
A tiny snake and a tiny monitor (they don't get big enough to eat rodents)

Just my 6 girls. :)

I grew up with dogs and plan to have some in the future, but we're in a rental right now and with me in school... blah. I don't have the time or energy for a dog, you know?

Well, let's see...

5 rats
1 Texas cichlid
1 Convict Cichlid
1 Jack Dempsey Cichlid
3 Angelfish
1 female Betta
7 Black skirt Tetras
1 Albino cory catfish
2 Julii cory catfish
2 Black Neon Tetras
3 Neon Tetras (the red and blue kind)
1 husband

No dogs or cats, or anything else for that matter, until we get back home from our 2 week visit to Australia. We have discussed it and agreed that it isn't fair to bring a new pet into our home and then take off for 2 weeks.

13 boy rats ( 7 nekkids)
1 Degus
1 Norwegian Forest cat
1 10 yr. old Butterfly Hillstream Loach
2 Panda Cories
1 Pristella Tetra
1 Newly re-homed male mouse from my daughter's friend

This is a small menagerie for us. Normally we have more ratties, fish and degus.Sadly, a virus or genetic condition took out most of the degus colony last year.

down to 3 ratlets as of today
2 cats
1 turtle - red-eared slider
10 gal tank w/feeder guppies for big tank, danios, frog, kuhli loach, rasboras/tetras i forget
55 gal tank w/salvini and firemouth cichlid and giant danios and pleco

if i had a bigger place i think i could squeeze in one more small terrier-type dog but i don't want to be unfair to a dog in my tiny apartment or unfair to the cats and not give them enough space by bringing in a dog just yet. :)

What are Degus like as pets? They've always fasinated me and I wanted to get a pair before I found out about and got rats. They seem like funny little creatures :)

We don't have many pets these days, when I was younger though we had loads, lol. At the moment we /I have...

Degus are fascinating critters. They're very smart (maybe not quite as smart as ratties, lol) and have a wide range of vocalizations, which sounds a lot like chirping and a babbling brook. They'll "talk" to you if you chirp and whistle to them. It used to drive my husband crazy when I did that but I guess he just tunes it out now.
There wasn't much info about them on the web when I got my first pair of sisters so I had to do a lot of indepth looking, mostly into lab research to find anything about them. There wasn't much food available for degus' commercially so I've ended up making my own version of a " 'GooBee" mix that works really well for them.

They really should be in pairs or even better a trio. They're like chins and should have a "dusty bath" available. They are hilarious to watch when they roll around in the dust.

Degus are mostly friendly but not really domesticated and don't care much to be picked up. They will tolerate being petted or taking treats from your hands. They need space and lots to chew on and climb on. And they loooooove running on wheels!

I love my 'goos but if I had to choose between the two I would definitey pick rats over degus. Rats are much more "interactive" and form bonds with their humans where the degus don't.

I have 4 ratties
1 ferret
And a 7 month old American Staffy.
And my fish Miagi recently passed (he was a siamese fighter)

People tend to turn their noses up at the ratties and ferret.
Even though they're the sweetest things I've ever owned.
And Cash my pup gets a few strange looks from people who make assumptions when I walk him, because they think he looks like a pitbull (illegal in my state)
In the past I've owned a pair of 'wild' pigs which we rescued when I was a child they were pretty awesome concidering they weren't domestic animals.
